Fred
I never had a clue!

Rick,

I don't know if you went wrong. I am still single and you are married. I guess it depends on your perspective.

Danny,

At my age I'm impressed that I remember ANYTHING too!!!

03/17/09 10:30 PM #239

Valerie Dotson (Westmoreland)

My first date at North - Billy Spaugh. Carolyn Dillworth and I double-dated; she went with Gary Mundy. (We were afraid to go out with North guys alone!) If memory serves me corectly, the guys took us to see the movie "Billy Jack" AND out to a nice restaurant for dinner. Anybody else remember that...Carolyn, Billy, or Gary?

03/17/09 10:34 PM #240

Valerie Dotson (Westmoreland)

I misspelled "correctly." Ha!

03/18/09 08:54 AM #241

Carolyn Dillworth (Warren)

Yes Valerie, I do remember that and Billy and Gary took us on a very nice "date". GREAT GUYS! What fun times, oh to be young again!

Valerie,

I guess I can understand your hesitancy to be alone with the North guys, but honor compels me to point out those two chaps were from Mineral Springs. We Northwest men were scholars and gentlemen...kind of heart, gentle of disposition...loyal and steadfast, and above reproach.

Just sayin'.

Pam Griffin (Guyer)

Rick,
HA HA HA!!!!! Just take a look on my profile page at the last picture and tell me if those are some threatening little faces. Sweethearts!!!!!!!!!

03/18/09 10:22 PM #244

Valerie Dotson (Westmoreland)

This is true; guess we were attracted to those "dangerous" types! But I married a Northwest guy, so there you go...

03/18/09 11:35 PM #245

Rick Hardy

Pam...try as I might I can't think of anything bad to say about those particular 4 boys so I reckon you got me there. I would be hard pressed to name 4 better ones from over my way. I'd pay you a nickel if you could dig up a pic of Mark Williams from the same era.

Valerie...you done good...got you a Northwest man and a Tiny Falcons football hero to boot.

03/19/09 09:30 AM #246

Donna Canter (Goforth)

Valerie - you know you married my first boyfriend. I was at Old Richmond my first year and then went off to Rural Hall. I can remember not wanting to leave because of him.
Nothing like young love........

03/19/09 10:36 AM #247

Valerie Dotson (Westmoreland)

Yes, Rick, I did do well, and I STILL hear about those Tiny Falcon days - as do our boys and I suppose our grandchildren soon! Haha! And no, Donna, I did not know about your Old Richmond crush. I knew him back then, too - from church. He was a cutie! We have been very blessed over the years.

03/19/09 01:03 PM #248

Rick Hodges

Dang Donna I thought I was your first boyfriend........I have been living in a fantasy world all this time.....but I still love you

03/19/09 01:28 PM #249

Donna Canter (Goforth)

Hey Rick - this was before I met you. After the Stanleyville Drug Store Days you were the one and only.
At least when you weren't with Wanda or Vickie or ......hmmmmmmm.

03/19/09 05:19 PM #250

David Wilson

hey rico.....do you remember going into Roses (i remember the popcorn smell too), or maybe Grants, or both, over at Northside...and there not far from the front door, not too far from the $1.75 LPs and 25-cent 45s, way up high on top of a display rack, were three or four Tulio/Tiesco/"other brand name" electric guitars all shiny and out of reach from us kids.....maybe an amp or two of similar imported brand name.....you could go over to Sears and play a Silvertone any time you wanted....(Black Diamond Strings - the best you can my, my arse....but we probably believed it at the time......I remember staying at Paul Gardner's house and sneaking in some playing time oh his dad's Gibson SG with the Bigsby Tremelo.....I don't think to this day I ever played an electric guitar that was as smooth as that one....I do remember the coffee smell in A&P.....all the stuff you guys still remember.....seeing Pilot Mountain from various locations.....all that....

and Pam, I think i do remember seeing you on the go-go stand shaking it at the Kiddie Show....

and Dennis......you are dead on about Tom's milk shakes and hot dogs.....best all around, except maybe Dine-In-Car hot dogs.....you know, back then they all probably bought their hot dogs from the same distributor...it must have been the chili that made the difference...but with Dine-In-Car you could watch the airplanes land....

these trips down memory lane have been wonderful...learning a lot about my Northwest (and Tabor) brothers and sisters too....we really were not that much different at Mineral Springs.....but it is still fun to remember the way we all used to think we were better than the rest....I'd say that pretty much levels out....at North we did have something special and it is evident in this forum.....keep it going....I am anxious to learn more about Fred's wild days.

Since we are on the subject of Nortside, did anybody eat at Staley's or at Ray Hamburgers? Heck, I remember when Staley's had curb service! Anybody ever shop at Paul Rose? And Donna mentioned the Winston-Salem Drive In...does anybody else feel a certain sadness that drive ins have dwindled to a precious few? The Bel Air closed a few years back, and one of the classic rock stations broadcast from there on their last night of operations. For B movies like horror or sci-fi you couldn't beat a drive in. And if there wasn't much action on the screen, you could bet there would be some in the cars!!!

I must be suffering from Valerie's problem: I misspelled Northside!

One of my favorite movies of all time was The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly which I saw at the WS drive-in...didn't they also have a miniature train there?

Dave...that subterrainean Sears was just the best, and the ride there and back was pretty cool along Reynolda with the trees on both sides.

Someone please help...I have been racking my brain trying to remember the name of the restaurant in Stanleyville that had those little jukeboxes at each booth.

I heard Telstar on XM Channel 6 the other day...still mesmerized by that song.

Remember holding the tv rabbit ears so the picture would be clearer?

Remember the pep rallies and skits in the gym at North?

Y'all, I know it was not Paradise everyday (the riots, breakups, smashups and the other bad things we tend to forget), and probably every class thinks it is special...but there WAS something special about the class of '73. Maybe it was partly a space in time but it was mostly the people. Like Dave said...we arrived at the spot from different directions but we were all the same.

Rick,

I remember too well the riot in November of our Sophomore year (1970)and the police in the hallways for weeks afterward. It was because of that incident that Forsyth County changed the school system structure and we ended up with only two officials grades at North. Seniors and Juniors, but we still had The Freaks! I think the defining moment of our high school years was winning the state 4-A football championship in our classes' Junior year. That event brought us all together as a family. When we entered our Senior year, everything was different. Everyone knew about the North Forsyth Vikings and we as Seniors exuded a pride that would erase the memories of the riots of 1970. We as a class rose above the issue of race and set an example for our entire community. I feel that this defines us as a class and makes the bond that we all share stronger than any other class that has ever graduated from North Forsyth.

Somewhere Ms. Blackburn is cringing because I did not include any paragraph breaks in my post. I beg forgiveness from my favorite teacher.

Rick,

I remember that restaurant in Stanleyville. It was with in walking distance of my house at the intersection of Highway 66 and Old Highway 52, but for the life of me I can not remember the name. They served hamburgers with cole slaw and chili on the burger. You couldn't find a joint today that puts cole slaw on a burger if your life depended on it. What's up with that?

And by the way, did anyone else besides me love eating banana sandwiches? Bananas with Dukes mayonnaise spread on two slices of bread. When I mention this creation of God to my Virginia friends, they think I am crazy.

Dennis,

What do Virginians know about anything anyway? Whenever I cross the border of our beloved Old North State into Virginia I always feel like the average IQ increases in both states. Banana sandwiches? Oh yeah, baby...and why bother if you don't put mayo on both pieces of bread? And I don't know why, but they taste better if you cut the banana into little disks instead of long slices.

I used to go to the Marsh office in Richmond fairly often...got lost almost every time thanks to the absurdly high number of one way streets there.

Well said about what makes our class special and so true about that 11th grade year. You could actually move through the halls because of less congestion, and you betcha that football team united us as nothing other than a tragedy could have...blacks and whites, geeks and freaks - we all became Vikings. That place, that time, that team, those people...together we survived the perfect storm of the previous year that resulted from too many people in too small a space with outside agitation as a catalyst and we moved to the calm seas and fair breezes of the next year.

It's making me nuts that I can't remember the name of that restaurant.

Rick I believe it was Stultz Restaurant..Had great hot dogs. It was at the fork of highway 52 and 66. Across from Stanleyville Pharmacy......where I got some good kisses from Donna!! And Donna my memory is bad but I dont remember a Wanda or Vicki lol

Hodgey,

That's it! Thanks bro...now I can put my mind at ease.

Man, I can remember flipping the tabs on those little booth jukeboxes like it was yesterday.

03/20/09 10:40 AM #259

Rick Hodges

I had forgotten all about the Jukeboxes at each booth.......they were cool There was also another rest. towards North Forsyth......... that was Scottys

The restaurant was Shouse and Stoltz. And, Dennis, you, my friend, are a conoisseur of banana sandwiches. That Hellman mayonnaise is the key. I had one yesterday as a matter of fact. In fact, Dennis, you and ate lunch at that restaurant as fifth graders. We were in Mrs. Walters' class at Rural Hall and she loved The Sound of Music and taught us all the songs. We sang some at a teachers day or something which would normally have been a day we wouldn't have gone to school. She treated us all to hot dogs and hamburgers there. I'd love to have one of those hamburgers. Sure bet it was better than McDonalds.
