That's it!! Stoltz' Restaurant!!! There is a new burger joint in that location now though the name escapes me (here we go again). Steve I remember that but Mrs. Walters was the 6th grade. I was in Ms. Wagoner's (later changed to Mrs. London after she got married mid year) class in the 5th grade.

Rick,

Stanleyville Pharmacy!!! I spent many a summer morning as a kid in the back of that place reading every new comic book from cover to cover!

I think the reason that the banana sandwiches with the little disk taste better than the long slices is because you can get more banana on the bread with the disc. Of course if you start out with a finite amount of banana to begin with, I guess it doesn't matter how you slice it.

The reason there are so many one way streets in downtown Richmond is so that during rush hour when everyone is stuck in traffic for an hour or more, they are at least all facing the same way.

Richmond baffles me. We were literally in sight of the Jefferson or Jeffersonian or whatever it is and it took us 30 minutes to figure out how to get to it. Goochland area is nice, though...went to several polo matches out there (guests of Marsh McClennan).

I think the place where Shouse & Stoltz used to be is now Dairy-O or something like that.

Dennis...only 167 days to kickoff.

Rick

I live in Short Pump which is the Far West End of the Richmond area about a mile from the Goochland County line. Short Pump for a long time was the place to live here in Richmond. Kind of like where we grew up in Winston only a little bigger. Now with all of the development, shopping malls and office buildings it is more like Cary, NC. (Collection Area for Relocated Yankees!)

The Jefferson is a very nice hotel. Unfortunately because of the urban blite in downtown Richmond, there is nothing around it. The Shockoe Slip area east of the Jefferson down Cary Street and the Shockoe Bottom area a little further east and down the hill are where the really nice restaurants and night clubs are located. I have consumed many a Stella ale at Sine's Irish Pub in the Slip. That might be one of the reasons that I can't remember things too well??

Spring practice started yesterday and Russell Wilson (a hometown Short Pump kid) is ready to go!!!!!

There is absolutely nothing to say Deac fans except...next year hope will spring eternal...again! Ha-ha!

Valerie,

That has been the motto of State basketball fans for the last 18 years - WTNY (Wait Til Next Year)

Dennis - where is David Thompson when you need him, right?!

Actually Valerie I used to see David Thompson regularly while tailgating at the NCSU football games. He parked about three spots from us and we grilled shrimp & steaks together occasionally. Last time I saw him was at the NCSU-USC game last fall in Columbia as he was walking through the stadium. He still looks like he could drop 40 pts on some of the teams today.

Dennis,

I must confess I am a Wake fan but David Thompson was the best basketball player I ever saw. In fact, the team he played on was one of the best I ever saw. Monte Towe was a great player and even Tommy Burleson had some great moments - especially against Bill Walton.

Yeah, Mike is a Wake fan and a secret Duke fan, but David Thompson is his all-time favorite college player. Has baseball started yet? We're usually pretty good at that! :)

Val,

Baseball has started and the Pack just took 2 of 3 from the Deacs this past weekend.

Steve my Freshman year at State was when we won the NCAA Championship (74). All of the basketball team lived on the 2nd floor of my dorm (Sullivan Dorm) and that is where I got to know David and Tommy Burleson. Towe roomed with Thompson, but he had a smoking hot girlfriend so I never saw him that much.

There was a free play Werlitzer jukebox in the lobby of our dorm and you always knew when Burleson had been there because he would punch in "Angie" by the Rolling Stones ten times in a row on it. I hate that song to this day because of that.

NCSU plays Wake in football this fall on Saturday, October 3rd in Winston. I think we need to organize a tailgate/game reunion for anyone that would like to go to the game that weekend. I think it would be great fun for us to get together for the game and maybe a happy hour/dinner the night before. Anyone interested?

Seriously...baseball, too?! Ha-ha!

One of our classmates - Dallas Montgomery - lost his father this weekend. At the funeral I saw Sharon Poindexter. She is not out of the woods yet - so continue to pray for her - but some of the news regarding her cancer has been positive.

Sorry to here about Dallas' father, but thankful for the encouraging news about Sharon!

With the interest regarding the old Shouse and Stoltz restaurant, I am trying to see if I can secure a photo. Rural Hall is starting a little museum, and I have emailed the lady who is putting it together (who incidentally is related to Pam Guyer) to see if there is a picture available. My guess is there is. The picture was in a Rural Hall history published as part of the 1976 bicentennial.

Hey Steve,
Which of my relatives did you email? Maybe I can help out.
Boy do I remember those days when I was just a little girl and we would pull up and eat when they had curb service. Best cheeseburgers and hot dogs in the world.
Do you know that little white house across from the old Warren's Drug Store was where my parents lived when I was born. It's still there I guess. What about the GreenFront
Service station, Stanleyville Drug Store (I worked for Dr. Cleary one summer), Stanleyville Produce, Lum's, etc.
I could go on and on. My parents are buried at Crestview Cemetery and I remember the white ducks on the pond there as a little girl. We used to take the ducks we got for Easter there after they got too big.
What great memories!!!

Donna Canter (Goforth)

Pam - I remember all of this. Do you remember the bands that played at Stanleyville Drug Store? And I actually worked at Crestview before I went to work for Hanes back in 1980. Did you ever eat at Tiny Diner in King. Their hamburgers were great. Different from the rest - makes me wonder today what they were made of.

Pam Griffin (Guyer)

Donna, Lord yes, I remember the bands at Stanleyville Drug Store and the Tiny Diny. My great grandparents lived in King and we always stopped there when we went to visit.
Do you remember the bands and music at Northside Shopping Center when we were little? I remember them playing Chubby Checker and my brother and I would do the twist.

Hey Val....all you Wake Fans....and all you "other team" fans......there's a very good story on Aaron Curry at http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/draft09/news/story?id=4030851 if you get a chance, check it out...I believe we will see the term "greatness" taken to another level with this kid....glad Wake took a chance on him when Duke, NCSU and UNC did not. I do wish he would leave the tattoos alone, though....never been a fan of all that skin paint......kinda thuggish to me.

Hey you guys, I have created a new VIKING FORUMS page that is topical. YOu can select what discussion thread you want to post a message in by topic , try it out. It will be better than a jumble of topics in this particular forum....

Renee Gilman (Chip Picot's Sister)

To Fred and everybody else at the reunion...

Over Easter, I was at my parents house and my father had received the reunion DVD. My brother Dean and I watched it first...Dean picking out many of the folks I didn't recognize--but I did pick out a few. We appreciate you all so much recognizing Chip at the reunion. As I've stated before on this forum, he loved his time at North. Playing football, tennis, the drums in our basement and everything else (that I probably didn't know about!!!)

Again, thank you for remembering Chip and thank you for sending us the DVD.
